Using a custom landing page for your achievement

Last Updated: Jul 11, 2018 02:14PM EDT

Overview of Merit’s Landing Pages Feature

Enabling the Landing Pages feature allows Merit users to direct the traffic from the audiences you’re reaching (high schools, government representatives, parents, and students) to pages on your own institutional website.

For example, you could publish an achievement about students studying abroad, and instead of redirecting viewers to your school’s pages on meritpages.com, you could send them to the overview of your study abroad program on your institutional site! Routing valuable traffic to pages on your site further drives enrollment, retention, influencer engagement, and more.

*Custom landing pages can be set up in your Merit settings on the Landing Pages tab and may require coordination from your website administrator. Read more about setting up landing pages here

What happens when you use a custom landing page?

When you use a custom landing page, all links to the content that you publish give the viewer an experience where they are shown the story they clicked to read, but it is shown in a lightbox displayed on top of the landing page on your institutional site that you have chosen. For example, this would include:

  • Links to the student's story in emails to students
  • Links in to the student's story in emails to parents
  • Links to view a story on student Merit pages
  • Links to student stories/achievements that are given to government representatives
  • Links to student stories/achievements that are given to high school recipients

View of an achievement page when using custom landing page:

In the example below, we see a student achievement page displayed in a lightbox on top of the landing page on your website that you have selected for that achievement. When the viewer closes the lightbox they will be on the landing page you chose.

In the example below, we see a student story displayed in a lightbox on top of the landing page on your website that you have selected for that achievement. When the viewer closes the lightbox they will be on the landing page you chose.

When no landing page is chosen (Use Merit's built in landing pages)

In the example below, a custom landing page was not used. In this case Merit uses the default achievement landing page.

When using Merit's default landing page, student stories are displayed in a lightbox on top of the page when clicked on.

Choose a landing page for an achievement

When composing a new achievement, you'll see an option to choose a landing page for that achievement. Please note that choosing a landing page is optional. If you do not choose a custom landing page for your achievement, then Merit will use the default achievement landing page on meritpages.com.

Setting up a landing page:

Landing pages can be configured on the Landing Pages tab in your Merit settings.

Types of landing pages (Javascript or iFrame)

To use a web page on your own website as the landing page for a Merit achievement you must either:

  1. Include our merit.js Javascript library on your web page, OR
  2. Allow your web page to be placed into an IFRAME

Landing Page Option 1: iFrame mode

For this option you must ensure that the landing page you wish to use allows iFrames. There is no other set up required. If your landing page does not allow iFrames, then you must either enable this option on your site, or use option 2 - Javascript mode.

Landing Page Option 2: Javascript mode

For this option you must ensure that the following javascript is present in the <head> section of your landing page:
<script src="https://api.meritpages.com/merit.js"></script>

Editing a landing page

To edit a landing page, click on the landing page name. You can change the name, URL, or switch it from javascript mode to iFrame mode.

Deleting a landing page

You may delete a landing page if necessary. If you delete a landing page all links to that landing page will redirect to the default achievement landing page used on meritpages.com.

Invalid landing pages

If Merit detects that any of your landing pages has become invalid, then you will receive an email notification letting you know. Reasons for a landing page becoming invalid could include:

  1. The merit.js Javascript library was removed from your web page
  2. Your webpage no longer allows for content to be displayed in an IFrame.
