How to Convert Text to Title Case

Spreadsheets cannot be edited once they're added to Merit. Make any necessary changes to your spreadsheet prior to uploading it.

When preparing your achievement, you may sometimes find yourself with columns of text in all caps. When that happens, this text must be converted to title or sentence case before bringing your spreadsheet into Merit. This page includes instructions for converting case in Excel.

Instructions

In this example we have a spreadsheet of students with their majors in all caps:

For this tutorial, we will replace the text in all caps with text in title case. To do this, add a blank column to your spreadsheet:

In a newly added Major column, we will enter a formula that references the original cell. There are three possible formulas for converting text. Here they are:

  • =PROPER() - Converts to title case (capitalizing the first letter of each word)
  • =UPPER() - Converts to uppercase
  • =LOWER() - Converts to lowercase

You will want to insert the cell you're referencing between the parentheses in the above formula. In this case, the cell is H2, and our formula looks like this:

This formula will display the altered version of our text in this cell. We can then copy and paste the formula throughout the entire column:

Next, you should highlight the altered cells and copy them. Immediately right-click and choose Paste Special from the dropdown box. Selecting the Values option on the sub-menu will replace your formula with the actual text:

Lastly, you should delete the original column to make sure you don't have duplicate column headers in your spreadsheet:

Review your converted entries after changing the case to make sure the data looks good. One of the most important things to look for is text that should have mixed case. Be on the lookout for hyphenated names and common names that begin with Mac, Mc, O' or Van. They may require touching up after conversion.

Note: The instructions and images on this page may differ slightly depending on your operating system and version of Excel.
