How to Split a Column Into Multiple Columns

Spreadsheets cannot be edited once they're added to Merit. Make any necessary changes to your spreadsheet prior to uploading it. 

When preparing your achievement, you may sometimes find yourself needing to break up one column of text into multiple columns. This page includes instructions for performing a text-to-columns split in Excel.

Instructions

In this example, we have a spreadsheet that has students' full names in one column:

For this tutorial, we will replace the full name column with individual columns for students' first names and last names. To do this, add 2-3 blank columns to your spreadsheet immediately after the column you want to split:

Then highlight the column that you want to split, and go to the Data tab in Excel and choose the Text to Columns option:

This will open up a dialogue box. Select Delimited and click Next:

A Delimited split allows you to replace every instance of a chosen character with a column break. In this case, we'll choose the Space option. If the preview data looks good, click Finish:

The full name column will now be split into multiple columns:

Take a moment to review your data, paying close attention to any instances where more columns were created than you expected. In this case, additional columns may have popped up if students had compound names like Mary Beth, multiple last names, or a middle name/initial included.  

Edit the cells as needed and delete any empty columns:
