Campus and Personal Email Addresses

Merit supports the use of multiple email addresses for each student. While notifications from Merit will only go to the primary email address associated with the student's account, a secondary email address will help ensure their data is accurate.

Email addresses can be added through student imports, achievement spreadsheets, or manual entry into Merit.

There are several benefits to using both students' campus and personal emails:

  • Merit's ability to match student identities is improved. If the student attended a high school or another institution that uses Merit, their personal email address helps Merit recognize that the account is for the same person. This will prevent Merit from creating a duplicate account for the person.
  • Students are able to choose which of their saved email addresses will be used as their primary address. This lets them direct their Merit email notifications to either their campus or their personal email.
  • When your institution inevitably deactivates your students' email addresses after graduation, they won't lose access to their Merit account.

The best time to add personal email addresses is when you're doing a student import. In the workflow, you will be prompted to map all of the various columns from your spreadsheet. Here you can choose to map both the Student Email Address and Student Email Address 2 fields:

Note: Do NOT include parent email addresses in the personal email address field. This could potentially cause a conflict if the same address is accidentally used for a sibling. If this happens, contact the Merit team at help@meritpages.com.

You can manually enter additional email addresses for students at any time. To do so, go to the Students tab inside your account and search for the student in question. Then click Edit to make changes to their profile:

This will display all of the student's saved data in Merit. Scroll down to the Email Addresses block to make changes. Use the +Add Email link to add a new address to the student's Merit account:
