We advise that you avoid student genders and pronouns (he/she/they/etc.) whenever possible, as they may have changed since your spreadsheet was pulled, but here are some guidelines for including them if necessary.
Gender Pronouns
In general, the best practice is to avoid gender pronouns in student achievements. These pronouns can only be used after the student was mentioned using their full name in an earlier sentence. Instead of using a gender pronoun upon second reference of the student, use the last name (or first name if you'd prefer):
- [John] [Smith], of [Albany], was named to the Dean's List at Merit University. [Smith] is a [senior] [English] major.
If you've confirmed your students' pronouns are correct, you can add a column to your spreadsheet for the student's gender [Pronoun] "He/She/They." These pronouns can be either capitalized or lowercase, depending upon where you plan on using them in your sentence. Here's an example:
- [John] [Smith], of [Albany], was named to the Dean's List at Merit University. [He] [is] a [senior] majoring in [English].
