When a student is added to Merit for the first time, either by student import or an achievement, they will receive a welcome email. If your institution uses Merit's Opt-in feature, students will see two emails instead of one. Here's how it works:
Standard Welcome Email
The first message will be your institution's regular welcome email intended to introduce them to Merit. A default welcome email will appear inside your settings; however, because this message is geared towards standard opt out accounts, we recommend that you alter this email for your students.

Here are some sample welcome emails with language about opting into Merit. If you would like additional ideas, contact the Merit team at help@meritpages.com.
Opt-In Permission Email
After a student follows the Sign in to Your Merit Page link in their welcome email, they will receive a second follow-up email that will prompt them to either participate in Merit or skip Merit altogether. This email cannot be customized.

Here's what happens if the student chooses each option:
Opt in: The student will be added to Merit immediately and gain access to their account, including their privacy settings. These students will receive achievement notifications and their achievements will be shared with all of your chosen audiences.
Do not participate: The student will be opted out of Merit immediately. They will not receive any further requests to opt in and they will be automatically excluded from all of your future achievements. Merit will not save their data or achievements.
No action: If the student does not respond by choosing either option, they will continue to get this notification each time they are recognized in a new achievement. At that point, they will be asked to either opt in or not participate again. Merit will save their data and achievements so that if they do opt in the future, their profile will be up to date.
